Why public notes?

Transparency in process

Making my thoughts publicly available contributes to a culture of interpersonal transparency. Many of these thoughts I write will be wrong or misguided, but I believe that when an individual reveals their personal process in all its fallibility, that visibility has the potential to be interesting or useful to others.

Release thoughts consistently

Publishing my notes allows me to easily and consistently cross the threshold of deciding what to publish. This scratches my itch to share certain thoughts that I think are worth sharing, without needing to delay until I feel they are highly polished (a goal which is always at risk of being unachievable). Slowly, this quells my desire to get ideas out into the world, and hopefully makes it easier to push further with worthwhile ideas.

Receive input

Writing thoughts out publicly also allows for others to help contribute to the selection of the most interesting and focus-worthy thoughts. This requires people to interact, or at least visit the notes. I do not currently expect that to be achieved consistently, but it is another corollary benefit that could arise from these public notes. Potentially, some ideas could become “open-sourced notes”, and allow for wider collaboration.
