Members of utopias don’t seem to be happy

“The inability of mankind to imagine happiness except in the form of relief, either from effort or pain, presents Socialists with a serious problem” (O. Dag, Why Socialists Don’t Believe in Fun)

Here Dag is describing the problem where in literature, it is easier to show suffering people as having happiness in the absence of their pain, than it is to show a person who is happy in a placid, utopic society.

Though it is hard to portray this phenomenon, is it actually the case that it is harder to be happy when there is no suffering to compare it with? Presentation versus reality
