Questions asked by Erik Landfried, responded by plan managers

My questions

  1. If NC 147 is going to eight lanes, they should definitely have a managed lane for buses, even if BRT doesn’t happen. How can we reach out to NCDOT about this?
  1. Can we see the remix tool?

Agenda:

Updated Sidewalk Priorities Framework - Brian Taylor

Safe Routes to School Program – Dale McKeel

Bike lane and neighborhood bike routes projects – Dale McKeel

Short connectivity projects – Dale McKeel and Brian Taylor

Sidewalk gap on NC 54 west of Barbee – Dale McKeel

Erik Landfried

Transit Equity Campaign reaching out again to transit plan for changing the average analysis

From engagement, priorities seem to be:

  1. Reliability
  1. Frequency
  1. Cross town routes

Question answers

  1. NC 147 lane discussions might be independent
  1. Erik will forward if he finds the remix map (he did, in email)

Brian Taylor

(Works with Dale? City employee of some kind)

Sidewalk prioritization 2021

Going through GIS maps where they charted sidewalk plans, combined with census data for poverty and minority

Interesting maps

!! Will these maps show up on Durham’s GIS site? What is the public database of these maps?

  • not yet, they’ll go up later after he presents

!! Compare ArcGIS with Remix by Via, what can we use to get comprehensive data on lots of different avenues? Seems like solving this problem solves a lot of planning, maybe could just run an optimization model and automatic solutions could be found.

  • reminder

!! Where do people submit feedback about where they want sidewalks?

  • Nowhere really, it seems. Emails, etc. Possible social pinpoint usecase

This is a work in progress, needs more approval. Interested in getting useful feedback. Hoping to bring to BPAC for feedback in October. City Council in November.

Some discussion between Brian and Constance

Money from Green and Equitable Infrastructure Bond

Minimal public involvement in deciding this, art and a science. Stuff from 2017 plan had some public feedback

Examples of places that risen to the top due to comments

Ross Rd, but was an emergency vehicle road so no speed bumps.

Still a work in progress

!! Prototype how social pinpoint could help the sidewalk prioritization plan

  • WIP

They are working outside of traditional planning methods, because “city manager is willing to borrow money to build sidewalks”

!! Why do these public projects always hire consultants?

Dale

Safe Routes to Schools Program

Entered into a contract with Bike Durham

!! How big is bike durham? What’s the history? Funding? What about Transit Equity Campaign (Erik’s thing)?

A third of the kids had not been on a bike before, bikes with pedals removed as a balance bike. Able to get the kids to try it.

Neighborhood Bike Routes

Neighborhood Bike Routes will create a network of low speed roads that are bike able ?

Came under the engineers estimate for price! Estimate was $400k, low bid was ~$200

Connectivity Gap Projects

Trail connecting two culdesacs, or etc.

One on Dallas St BPAC has been talking about for a long time, BPAC should push:

Ellerbee Creek Greenway connection to Urban St:

!! These connections could go on Social Pinpoint!!!!!!! Ask Brian to put his “unofficial” list on social pinpoint, maybe you need a sidewalk / path marker type on social pinpoint

  • WIP

Dale: Charlotte had a program at some point, we’re on a listserv with Nacto City (?)

$100k minimum for a Capital Improvement Project (CIP), so probably would have to bundle them ^0b942c

!! Possible social pinpoint marker types

  1. Sidewalks / connection requests
  1. Potholes
