Vision Zero presentation

Background

Started in Sweden in 1997

Traffic fatalities are not an acceptable trade off for mobility.

Accepts that humans in vehicles will make mistakes, so we need to build protections.

  • Durham averages 25 fatal crashes / year.
  • Nationwide, numbers are trending upwards. Non-automotive transit users are especially at risk (bike, walk, etc).
  • Struck and killed while walking up 35%

Durham first in NC and one of first mid-size cities in US to adopt it.

Emily Egge was on the vision zero team.

Details

Doug Bright (recently graduated from UNC graduate school of planning)

Doug created this “index”

!! Is there any short list of the most dangerous intersections?

^ asked, they don’t have a super clear prioritization

They seem to be more focused on equity concerns and roadways than necessarily finding the lowest hanging fatality reduction fruit, so to speak.

!! Is there any hope for adding some of these traffic calming elements to the city ordinances? Something to ask DevRev
