Overall this experience is pretty profound. But mostly as a proof of concept of what’s possible if you make it actually see-through (instead of displays that render camera passthrough).

Profound because, since the device can manipulate the image to both your eyes, you get this amazing sense of scale and depth that’s not communicable through regular images. I assume the Quest presents this idea but the screen quality on these is so good that it really is convincing and comfortable. It’s a pretty giddy feeling putting a big movie screen up 100 feet away from you over a lake in Mt. Hood.

Two axes for how it’s profound

Immersive spaces enabling perceptions of scale and depth

digital object permanence shows us what a world where digital and real objects blend could be like

Not sure that it’s a useful product for anything other than watching entertainment and working from home right now, but it delivers on a very nascent idea of the future (one that I think Apple hasn’t figured out yet and has delivered in some flawed ways, but one I’ve been optimistic about for a long time)

But the form factor is tough right now. More than the weight the fact that the camera passthrough is not lifelike and the minimum focus distance is at least a foot away, you can’t actually use it comfortably “all day”…
