bringing in some old ideas
Should consider starting a Failure Journal
Questions to answer
What is the “failure”?
Why do I call this a failure?
What did I do wrong?
What would it have meant for it to be a success?
What is the lesson I learned from this experiment?
Who can benefit from this lesson?
What’s a benefit that has come from this failure?
Layers of abstraction
Grant Sanderson mentioned this somewhere
with an example pointing to category theory as a high level of abstraction, if I recall correctly
Being precise about when we are moving up and down these layers always seemed important to me
I think this applies to System Design generally and to SDM
Why aren’t all people who claim to be highly rational not utilitarians ?
i.e.
Why do so many expected value maximizers go into finance and economics and worry more about personal financial gain over marginal moral impact ?
Should you do something that nobody else but you could do?
pseudo rationalism with an attraction to money / power?
If Amazon priced items based on how long they needed to be shipped, would that work effectively as a carbon tax for online shopping ?
Incentive design
really liked this term that I read from Devon Zuegel

20 hours in Istanbul
this is a note I made a few days ago for a couple friends visiting Istanbul on a long layover
ROI maximizes when around ~15% of program costs are dedicated to system engineering
does this generalize more or less to the following?
spend about 15% of your resources on organizational and operational optimization
1/7 of your resources should go towards operational optimization
one manager hired for every 6 engineers?
