Architecture is the mapping of function to form

Looking at a set of products and asking how many different architectures are there is a good way to determine if we have a shared idea of what falls under the scope of architecture

Different levels of granularity are acceptable, as long as they are backed by real architectural decisions

Does technology catalyze architectural change ?

Bruce Cameron seems to have researched this

Possible, but not required?

The chasm is getting adoption past the “innovators” and “early adopters”, to the remaining 85%

Find where the industry is on the s curve

referencing Chris Magee

charted storage capacity over time

seems to resemble the s curve

but still the eventual diminishing return

Worse on the existing dimensions of value, but win on a new dimension of value

eg

Google Docs vs Microsoft Office

Doesn’t necessarily require a change in architecture

Disruption can be hidden by market growth in the disrupted industry

Ice harvesting vs refrigeration

Existing players are often searching for incremental value

Disrupters are moving to a new dimension of value

Connectivity / IoT might be a place where we’ve seen minimal incremental value, but might see transformational value

I think the smart home will eventually head towards transformational value

Maybe allowing us to not have to be sole owners / residents of our homes?

create a new organizational structure to pursue new dimensions of value

the slope of the curve for disruptive technologies is often higher than of existing technologies
